Do STAR WARS Zero Company bonds do anything in combat?
Yes. Bond levels unlock combat passives, Cross Training synergies, and Call for Backup assists, and they feed Focus Points for talent ranks.
Searching star wars zero company bonds? In STAR WARS Zero Company, Bonds are the relationship layer between Operators. Deploy the same pair on tactical missions and Operations, talk in The Den, and the pair unlocks combat passives, Cross Training, and Focus Points for the talent tree. Ideological clashes still build Bonds — you do not need two Operators who like each other. Verified August 28, 2026. Steam.

A Bond is a pair, not a squad-wide meter. Two Operators who share a mission, an Operation, a Call for Backup, or a Den conversation move that pair’s track. Custom mercenaries Bond the same way authored Operators do — treat hires as first-class relationship targets until your client proves otherwise.

| Action | What it does | Community report (launch week) | Do not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finish a mission together | Default pair XP for anyone who deployed | About +30 once per map | Swap a pair out mid-chain and expect a second payout |
| Call for Backup | Teammate assists; official copy ties it to Bonds | +10 per use, capped twice per pair per mission (+20) | Spam it after the cap — the extra clicks do not pay |
| Minor combat actions | Heals, stims, extra-AP grants, paired shots | +4 each, capped five times (+20) | Burn consumables only to tick Bond |
| Revive / Rally | Saves a Downed Operator and ticks the pair | Counts, but Injuries are the cost | Farm Downed states on purpose |
| Operations + Den talk | Non-combat pair time and dialogue | Raises standing; Dilemmas shift each Operator individually | Skip Den conversations because the pair already fought |
Official materials describe Call for Backup as an assist that does not spend the usual Action Point budget: a nearby ally joins the shot, damage goes up, and the Bond track moves. Launch-week farming notes treat the Backup command itself as the tick — the assist does not have to connect. Cap is twice per pair per mission. Keep a short checklist: Hawks↔Trick twice, then the other pairs you actually care about.
Zero Company writes friction into the roster — Trick’s Umbara trauma versus later squadmates is the usual example. Dilemmas in The Den shift standing with each Operator separately. That is mood and dialogue, not a Bond lockout. You can still deploy a clashing pair, Call for Backup, and unlock Cross Training. Skip a pair only if you are about to permadeath one of them, not because they argue.
Once the pair actually levels, Cross Training is the combat payout — next section.
Cross Training is the synergy layer that unlocks when a Bond hits a new level. It is not a second specialization and it is not a talent swap. The pair starts sharing combat bonuses — community examples include crit chance and blaster damage — and the same Bond also banks Focus Points you spend on talents.

| Layer | What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Bond Passive | Permanent combat bonus for that pair | A global squad aura you keep after one Operator dies |
| Cross Training | Shared-training / synergy unlock at a Bond level | Secondary Specialization (mid-to-late campaign dual-spec; timing unverified) |
| Focus Points | Campaign currency the Bond feeds | Advantage — Advantage is the in-fight shared pool |
| Call for Backup | In-fight assist that also ticks Bond | An Overwatch cone |
Public systems copy is blunt: grow Operator Bonds to gain Focus Points and stat bonuses. The Operators you keep taking together are the ones whose kits get stronger. That is why a random four-person mix every mission looks busy and pays poorly. Repeat two or three pairs until Cross Training is online, then rotate.
Secondary Specialization (dual class) unlocks mid-to-late campaign and is spent in Personnel at The Den. Community timing conflict (Cycle 18 vs Luco recruit) — see classes. Do not wait on dual spec to start Bonding. Cross Training is available as soon as a pair levels; dual spec is a class-page problem — see also builds.
Focus is not a per-mission skill bar. It sits on the Operator and is spent in The Den’s Personnel / Focus UI on talent ranks, abilities, and passives. Bonds are the main faucet; missions and Operations also feed it. Exact node costs stay TBA on this wiki until captured — the spend order lives on the talents page.
Knowing the mechanic is useless if you Bond the wrong four names. Next: who to raise first.

There is no public Bond matrix with star ratings, and this wiki will not invent one. Use mission frequency and permadeath cost instead: raise pairs that actually deploy, and protect authored Operators whose unique talents you cannot recraft.
| Pair bias | Why first | Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Hawks + Trick | Hawks is required on story beats; Trick is the long-serving clone and a natural early deploy | Trick can permadeath — For My Brothers is a self-revive, not immortality |
| Hawks + Jae | Jae joins shortly after the intro; Final Shot wants an ally who leaves targets low | Keep Jae in range of the pair you are actually Bonding |
| Hawks + any custom Medic | Medic stims are the cleanest minor-action ticks without spending Advantage | Do not Down people on purpose to farm Rally |
| Authored Exotics (Tel-Rea, Cly) | Unique kits you cannot rebuild on a hire | Losing Tel-Rea deletes Jedi Padawan from that campaign |
| Clashing authored pairs | Friction still Bonds; you need the combat synergy anyway | Den Dilemmas can sour dialogue without freezing the track |
Hires banter, like and dislike, and develop Bonds. Species is cosmetic. The talent they picked at creation stays with them, so a custom Medic with Grit or Fortitude is a legitimate long-term pair with Hawks, not a placeholder until an authored name shows up.
Roster scales toward 20. Spreading Bond XP across every hire means nobody reaches Cross Training before Extreme maps show up. Two or three deep pairs beat ten shallow ones.
The next section is the failure mode that makes all of this expensive.
Three Injuries can permanently kill an Operator who is not Hawks. The story adapts and that plot thread closes. The Bond track, Cross Training, and Focus you invested in that pair go with them. That is the real permadeath tax — not just an empty slot on the next deploy.
| Situation | Bond cost | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Third Injury on an authored Operator | Pair track gone; unique talent gone | Medbay / Bacta before the next mission |
| Hawks Downs | Community: some maps fail when Hawks is Downed (verify) — Hawks still cannot permadeath | Keep Hawks in cover; Fearless Leader only works while Hawks is standing |
| Custom hire dies | That hire’s Bonds and talent ranks gone | Replaceable kit — cheaper than losing Tel-Rea or Cly |
| Turn permadeath off | Injuries still happen; death does not stick | Permadeath toggle — valid, not a cheat |
Revive ticks Bond, and community farming clips mention it. It also writes an Injury. Treat Rally as a save, not a farm. Medic stims and Call for Backup are the ticks you can repeat without Downing anyone.
Bonds only matter if you spend what they generate. The Focus Tree, talent pool, and Hawks / Astromech uniques are on talents.

Yes. Ideological conflict still builds Bonds. Dilemmas change dialogue and standing; they do not freeze the pair track.
Treat as yes. Hires banter and develop likes and dislikes. Confirm the UI in your client if a hire shows no track.
Not yet. Pair ratings stay TBA until captured in-game. Use mission frequency and permadeath cost instead of a fake star chart.
